I've never hated a tree so much before...
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD

A light tree pollinated so hard during a cyclical event it burned away all darkness creatures that were just minding their own ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ casual business, including all the chicks of a giant Dark Owl ("she" /Kuro - how original....) , whose sins were only "be alive" in a world where darkness-born creatures have no chance to exist.

I can't believe the protagonist, Ori, is the demonic spawn of a "spirit tree" which is both in charge of all life in Nibel, AND owns the right to take all lives it wishes at will for free.

Once i realized the giant dark owl Kuro had the right to be mad at a wooden mad god, i started to like her way more than Ori and everything.

What the Owl did bad was letting her fury destroy her nest by letting flames devour it, during Mount Horu final section.

I also can't believe the Owl sacrifices his own life in the most cliché and anti-climactic scene ever designed. She could've moved on with her life and chicks. .

What we got instead is she dies, Ori and Naru/Gumo (why didn't they die as well, since they're darkborn creatures too?) survives and have the brilliant idea to picture themselves with the owl in a "happy" scene that never happened.

The real injustice (?) is the light tree and its spawn thrives at the end. Event that will likely destroy any other non-lightborn creatures that will happen in future.

I felt pitty for Kuro and her chicken as well and never understood why the spirit light of the tree needed to actually wipe out most life around it. Neither properly explained nor you can conclude that by yoursellf flawlessly with other informations you get.

But that is what the circle of life is it seems. To renew things other things has to go. If the tree is in danger, to save the forest, it seems to do that lethal shockwave. The tree seems neither driven by hate or sympathy. Its focus is to keep balance and the forest healthy. Without it, the forest is about to die - and with it all the creatures in it. So Ori and the spirit tree is neither 'demonic' but kind of much needed mechanism of the nature of this fictioness fantasy world in the tale. You make like it or not. But why do wars happen in our world if a god exists? Why isn't (s)he interfering? It is the very same. You could hate any god(ess) for that reason.

What actually happens to a forest in the world of Ori if the spirit tree completely dies you see in the sequel 'Will of the Wisp'. Is much worse at the end than a quick killing spirit light wave for repelling threats and renewance of the forest. Don't want to spoil, but if you see the sidequest story about the Moki family you will know what I mean. Saddest thing ever.

I appreciate the answer. I am currently a bit upset at the first game, but i will likely spend a few bucks to try the next game once it gets a juicy discount.

You're welcome. I totally undestand that you are upset about that spirit tree killing wildlife recklessly. But I think you just need to take this as a given situation. In Ori's world this seems to be normal and part of keeping the world thriving.

And Moon Studios seem to love characters, that are neither good nor evil, and stories that may be controverse from whatever angle you take a look at them. Aweful things will happen again that you may like or not - but this is part of the the fictional story Moon Studios want to tell.

I personally like the Ori games a lot, the atmosphere, the gameplay, the kind of story telling. But not without some drops of bitterness here and there. Yet the whole opus does work out for me.

Yes, get the sequel on a sale.
