Alternatively, water breathing, and they didn't have time to develop it properly before dying-it's an ability you can get without needing to absorb an ancestral tree's light after all.
Oh that's nice! I would have voted for "kindness" as well, but absorbing spirit light of enemies seems to make much sense to me, sort of. It even gets a special mention in the game ("Their lights shall return to me, these words the sprite tree once said"). And if Ori is specially 'sent' / revived by the Tree... Whenever "once" was, and also it doesn't seem to be some sort of prophecy thing...Though, waterbreathing also makes sense.... Shame that the "mythology" behind the game is not so hugely developed.
