How good is the gameplay ?
Hi,

I am interested in the game, but I'm a bit suspicious because all I see are praises on the art and the story / atmosphere.
It reminds me of Dust : and Elysian Tale, which looked a lot like Ori, but had a really poor gameplay in my opinion.
A game made by an artist, beautiful, but not very interesting to play sadly :(

I did not watch too many videos to avoid spoilers.

For me Gameplay > everything else, always.
So how is ori on that part ?

Thx

Don't be deceived by its looks, it might look like one of those cutesy casual platformers but it's actually quite challenging. I'm also one that prefers gameplay over everything else and this game did not disappoint even a little bit.

The platforming is actually pretty dang good. The game has excellent art, yes, but it did not come at the expence of gameplay. To be completely honest, the combat is not amazing, but isn't horrible either. Your basic attack will just home in on the closest target, so hitting enemies isn't super skill-dependent, but dodging attacks usually is. It's far from the best combat system I've seen, but the game is designed around it well and you unlock more variety as you progress.

The level design is just superb though. Especially in the "temple" areas. This game has a plethora of fun and interesting mechanics that are very well utilized. These devs have an excelent understanding of how to sculpt a dificultly curve. I almost never felt bored or frustrated during my playthrough, and the way they went about checkpoints is particularly brilliant.

Trust me, this is a fun game. You will not be disappointed.

OK thx a lot !

I'm still hesitating, did it have a better sale than 50% alwready ?

I've played both Dust and Ori. I also enjoyed both, though the gameplay in Dust did feel substantially less polished. The core gameplay in Ori is hard to fault, unless you prefer some facets of skill to go into attacking and not just avoiding getting hit (it's kind of more like a Zelda LttP [ed: possibly a bad comparison, LttP required some positioning to go into attacking too I guess] than Metroid in that regard).

However, there is one warning I do have to give: there are a handful of timed sequences in the game that can be pretty difficult to get through - they're a LOT harder than most of the game - and it's not uncommon for people to get frustrated and give up there. If you're okay with that - and yes, it is worth it :) - then you won't regret it.

Unfortunately I haven't kept track on the sales, so couldn't tell you if it's been discounted more than 50% yet. Personally, I don't think it's ever a crime to wait though - this won't be the last time it's on sale.

I find the story so far and the visuals very appealing. The gameplay I find is lacking and I'm not enjoying the platforming - it feels very linear and lacks the depth I seek from platformers whether it be from simple or advanced mechanics

I did play hollow knight before this so that may have spoiled me. That game was platforming perfection

It's never been less than 50% off
