Unable to climb

I'm playing this game using the keyboard; everything was going well until I got the climb ability at Misty Woods. For some reason I'm totally unable to climb, and had to give up after changing the buttons several times (thanks for the useful button remapping posting!). Curiously enough, I can grab those rocks and push them using the same button, but the character doesn't stick to the wall...

did you hold "shift" ? or did you just press "shift" once.

Yes, I've tried everything: at first I thought that maybe the skill wouldn't work after a second jump. As I said before, it's really confusing that the other ability assigned to this button works perfectly with a very similar mechanism (hold the button and move). I wonder if it has to do with other assigned keys...
