Why characters animaions are at 30fps?
I wonder why this game character animations are running at 30fps, when the rest (camera movement, parallax scrolling etc. run smoothly at 60fps)... Did they use Flash technology for that?

I cannot confirm that. But for some animation they used another technique that is more 2D and maybe skips some frames. The difference to completely 3D rendered game framerate is what you might noticed looking a little bit off.

Last I checked the game runs on Unity... can't say I ever noticed the animations being a lower framerate than the rest, lol

They just might not have enough time/money to do that or something. Anyways, if you want to know more about the animation process, then one of the devs is talking about it here https://youtu.be/m8lOwrWNbEY

Cool link. Didn't thought they animated so many motions. Ok, then I can understand they did not had the time to do it with more frames.

Look carefully at characters animation (e.g. the intro but also when you move Naru) it's not moving smoothly at 60fps like the rest of the scene (camera, scrolling, parallax, particles...).
I wonder if they used SFW 30fps for characters animation (SWF is tipically locked at 30fps in many games... see f.e. The Cave and others)

P.S. remember video refresh means nothing: you can still play 30fps animations and have a screen refresh rate at 60fps...

Just watch the video nfnite posted. It is not flash, but they are totally rendered outside of the game like film elements. Technically not lower fps, but lesser frames where used indeed per seconds for the movements. So still, basically your are right when you noticed the animations to be a little bit more "stuttery".

The name of the program they used I already forgot again :ori:

Mmmh, yes... It's still a masterpiece of course, but my sensitive eyes noticed the smoothness difference ;)

Then let's hope they do it a bit more smooth for the sequel next year :)

They do have 60fps animation for Will of the Wisps, you can see it in the E3 demo.

Hope it's true: you know many see solid 60 FPS counter in the upper left and think everything in the game engine is actually running at 60fps, but it's not sometimes...

I know what you mean, but by "you can see it" I mean you can notice that the animations are much smoother than in blind forest. Also, I think it was confirmed in an interview or something, but I'm not 100% sure.

'(...) When the game originally released, Ori’s sprites were animated at 30 frames per second. But now on Switch, they’ve been updated to 60 FPS. This was achieved thanks to continued improvements with Moon Studios’ engine, director Thomas Mahler says. (...);

I would like 60FPS animations update also on PC (and Xbox).

Oh... so they released a Switch version with 60fps animations and not for PC/XBox?
