What mythology or folklore does this game take inspiration from?
The sequel "Will of the Wisps" is titled that for a reason. I need have a better understanding of what kind of will o wisp we're talking about to understand the sequel

Don't know if it's where it drew inspiration, but it feels similar to the nature spirits and small gods from Japanese folklore. Mystical nature beings are pretty common in different folklores though.

The wisp in the sequel name probably just refers to ghostly lights over water/marsh. I don't think they are going to use a mythology based being in their otherwise original world.

Good point

Most likely it just means that they're going to be making a story item out of the "Wisps" that were featured in One Life mode on Definitive Edition, the things that appeared to mark the place where you died on a previous run.

A good short answer... with mention of places like Nibel, it looks to be a happy mix of Germanic/Scandinavian and Japanese folklore. Wil-o-the-wisps are definitely part of the former, and there are will-o-the-wisp type oni in Japanese culture as well. It is definitely loosely based however, so I am not sure it can provide much in the way of clues for the sequel. :)
What it will end up with, only the Creators know...
