How to start the game?

Maybe this is a silly question, but how do you start the game?

I choose an animal and run to e. g. the farm. And then I press all buttons I have but nothing happens. Only exception: The animal is set back to it's starting position when I press the circle button (Dual Shock 4).

Also: I have only one gamepad. So is it possible to play all animals one after another with just one gamepad?
