Keyboard controls for combat - what am I missing?

Just started playing the game and it seems I have to press ctrl + 1, then ctrl + lmb to shoot (and for some reason I holster my pistol when I am attacked). I seriously cannot just keep my pistol in my hand? What the hell?

I can recommend playing with a XBox controller - goes smoothly like in Two Worlds 2.
But the shooting thing is really strange. You can either do a quick shot during saber fight or you have tp press a combination (keys or buttons) and aim and shoot. There is no "gun always ready feeling" like in other shooters .. well VCR is not one.. ;-)

OK, so it's not just something I missed. That's a really terrible setup for shooting. But I'll try the controller. Thanks!
