No, it can be done. Be decisive and fast and it is doable. I played no missions on easy and did the entire campaign.
I do recall having my behind handed to me 2 or 3 times before I won it though :)
Also, nothing is telling you you need to stay in the center where the AI can just overwhelm you. Get outside and fight only half the AI after which the 2nd half is a walk in the park.
Run two or three of your cells out and around to the back/top of the map, then hide them between the stalks that absorb your antibodies. The AI should group up where you started and send waves at you (that will be blocked if you're hiding in the stalks.)
Sit there and and upgrade, then order your antibodies to group up on the side and manually control them as you pick off the cells that the AI drifts out at you now and then.
It can be slow, but it works without you setting things on easy. :)
