QUESTION: How does the market work?
What I mean by this is that yesterday, there wasn't much for sale there; just a few purple items and a lot of greys and blues.

Today though! I looked and the market is stuffed with 3k gold items. Is this part of a sort of cycle by the devs where they inject valuable equipment into the market from time to time, or was this all done by players at this specific time for some reason?

I would have thought the selling process would almost be the reverse, considering the costs of the recent items; people would post expensive stuff and it would persist for a long time, rather than all selling out first. I'm also not sure why (or how) all these gold items suddenly sprang into existence, which is why I feel like it's something the devs are doing to get people to spend gold.

Or am I wrong about that?

That is as good a guess as anyone's ...I wondered the same by just percentages of crafted Items, but someone will soon show up to make this all sound perfectly normal!

market salting or manipulation is a OLD tactic in many loot games. Devs are loathe to talk about if the game does it though for reasons..usually rare means more likely whales impulse buy the last one sort of thing.

Uh what? Items of all rarities are always on the market. It depends on how you filter them. What you usually see shown on the market is the most popular exchanges in last minute of so. If you change filters to particular rarity, type or trading values, it would show you completely different table.

Stuff never just appear or vanish on the market.

all items can be found on the market you can search for specific item either by typing it name or filter via type (hardware, weapon ) or rarity ( special, epic , legenday )

The night before I saw this happen, there weren't any gold items to be seen. I know about the filters, but maybe I left one on. I don't think I did though. It seemed as if these items appeared overnight to me, as just a short time earlier, I had been browsing the market, and doing research on various weapons, and saw none of those weapons available. I remember being a bit annoyed none of the items where available at the time, and startled to see them all the next day.

Again, all items that can be traded are traded 24/7, no exceptions, and the market is shared for all users of the same platform between servers.
