All purchased items are gone after hiatus
I bought the game in december of 2016, which is after the changeover I believe. I also bought a pack or 2, and I have none of those items anymore.

Where did all my stuff go? is there a step I skipped?

My guess would be you logged in with steam at first -> Steam Crossout Account created

now with last patch the steam login didnt work for a time, so a lot of people created a gajin account -> EMPTY Gajin Account since not linked with steam.
Theres a sticky post on this forum explaining the Account linking. however after you already got both you have to contact support since they have to delete the empty account first.

So got game through steam, created account, went ingame options and added email there to create the properly linked gajin account? Or any other way?

For help with Linking your account, and if you perhaps made a mistake read the Support here

If above does not work for you file a support ticket , supply ALL the relavant data from accounts to get it resolved.

And if u played just before the last wipe your account should have the original things. if you purchased any, if u played in CBT and made items well there was a wipe and fresh start for open.
