I feel legion is probably the most viable choice for those inexperienced with RTS games- as while you still need to expand, but as most players tend to try to turtle, the faction's a bit more forgiving and allowing of that- whilst still pressuring players to expand. Legion has a bit of a reliance on artillery in that regards, both offensively and defensively, and just the right level of "manage your groups of units when nessasary, but otherwise they're good to go on their own."

MLA is just boring to me, and Legion is fan-made and not actually official. Even if they were, Legion failed in their mission. There is no room for failure.

If I ever get good again, it will probably be as mla. I'm an expand everywhere kind of guy. I like to put on the pressure early and never let up. Legion has some real cool units, but I feel too slow to expand with them. I've seen AdmiralGeneral do a nice lancer-focused early game that let him keep up with me as mla, but I suspect that a better player than I am could have still kept him pinned down.

Lancers and maurauders are generally legion's tools of choice at the start of a game, As legion, you really need to get those resources and tech 2- or harrass their economy long enough.
