Also, I use a fast clicker instead of an auto clicker.
Also upgrading Time Cube drop rate and drop count are a must. Basically you play until you can't beat a boss without using your skills, then reset and buyTime Cube Artifacts, rinse and repeat. Since you get base DPS increases just by simply gaining Time Cubes, you will eventually start reaching higher waves even without buying DPS Artifacts.
My personal upgrade order is:
TC Drop Chance/Count Artifacts > Income Booster Artifacts> Team DPS Artifacts > Wave Length Reducer > Ability Cooldown/Active Duration Artifacts > Clicker Artifacts > Ability Performance Artifacts (Excluding Dimension Shift) > Misc Leftover Artifacts when I have left over cubes.
Don't buy Dimension Shift Artifacts unless you are doing endurance runs, as you will most likely be resetting after using it only once or twice, which really doesn't help overall DPS.
Leave start wave and start cash at their own repsective lowest levels, only increasing them when you are able to clear the currently set starter waves with the OVERPOWERED meter active. Your aim is to reach the optimal balance of wave clear speed versus wave income. If the waves are too easy and not yeilding good enough returns, increase starter wave/cash. If it takes you more than about 2 seconds to clear the first wave, reduce starter wave/cash. Also, starter cash should only be enough to allow you to clear the first few dozen waves easily, as after that you can use wave income to buy more upgrades. This allows you to save TC on other Artifacts.
Remember that this strategy only really works if you play idle, i.e let the game run in the background while you do something else. If you are more of an active player, you might want a different artifact upgrade order that focuses on ability cooldown/duration and clicker upgrades and less on team DPS. Hope this helps.
If you're talking about the skill boosting artifacts, I still buy them. I just make sure to buy other more important artifacts first. Other than the Teamwork skill that boosts team DPS and Gold Rush that increases gold dropped, all of the other skills primarily only benifit you if you are clicking. Meaning that I'd have to actually be playing the game instead of running it in the background to take full effect of them. That's why i prefer the other artifacts that always benifit me even if im not clicking and my skills aren't up. Currently my team clears each wave in under a second, before the Automatic Fire skill even gets a chance to hit anything, bosses included. I usually reset before the enemies get hard enough that I actually need skills to beat them.
Occasionally when I do endurance runs to farm weapon cubes I'll be using my skills more often though.
It's really important to get cube drop amount and chance maximized ASAP.
Additionally its great to get x enemies needed to defeat per wave and the boss timer skills up.
Upgrade those active powerups and cube conversion skills.
That's a pretty fail-safe start. Everything after that, well, let's say you'll figure it out while you're going.
