That doesn't strictly matter, but you should have your entire face inside the marked area. Provided it doesn't leave that area, you can have some gaps with it.
In some other thread somebody suggested, to obtain better results, you should make your scan using natural light

But yeah, I've seen people suggest outside in the shade, bathrooms, in front of a window, all kinds of wierd ways to get better lighting.
