Planet Centauri

Planet Centauri

Is this game a Terraria ripoff or something close?
Came here after the trailer got recommended to me on Youtube, and my first thought was "wow, the magic system looks like so much fun"
My second was "is that the dungeon... it is, it even has skeletons... and the same tile color, and the same torch color, and the same spike trap layout"
I want to like this game, I want to have a new dev team full of new and original ideas to make a game that is worth buying, but if they are just going to put out a game that could be confused for modded terraria, i do not want to be a part of it.
People, i would like to hear your thoughts if you've played the game, is it different enough to be worth spending money on?

Not really sure what you mean by "same dungeon layout". It very much isn't. Not even close actually.
This game has nothing to do with Terraria unless you consider "skeletons" to be owned by a specific game and not just part of pop culture as basic RPG enemies. Not every side scroller sanbox is a Terraria clone...
This game has a lot of unique mechanics separating it from similar games. For example, monster capture, transformations, custom spell system, magitech (think of electricity and logic similar to redstone in minecraft), a lot more focus on swordplay and combo chaining... And much more really.
When you say "different enough". would you consider Saint's Row different enough for GTA series?

this game is far from terraria ripoff, it feels more like a sandbox castlevania with a point of dark souls rather than terraria.

Apart from side scrolling, mining crafting and fighting it does not really share much with Terraria. You could say they are in the same genre, but Planet Centauri also has stuff like creature collection in there and the crafting, progression and gear/food system already works different than in Terraria.

Are you kidding me?
I played over 1200 hours of terraria, and I would never say that planet centauri is even close to a terraria clone or mod.

It has some similarities, but it's style looks completely different compared to terraria.
Da, this game has tiles that got higher resolution in terraria.
Terraria's blocks are tiny compared to what we got here.

I feel offended by this lmao, and I am not even in touch with any one who has been close to the dev of this game.

In summary: This game is not even close to a "terraria clone"
Stop, this game is just great. Give it a chance or at least do not insult it.

As a Terraria enjoyer, I have to admit I've never played it modded. I enjoy the base game and vision of the devs, and when I want to try something else, I go elsewhere.

I'm very new to this game still, got it during the most recent sale. It has a lot of offerings that set it apart. The dungeon system is quite different than Terraria's, as well as the boss arenas that I've seen. The pet/summoning system is unique to this game as far as I know, and the Magic system allows for fully customized spells down to which element and which type sprite effect you want, how far you want it to reach, and how big you want it to be.

If you're skeptical, or don't have a big entertainment budget, wait for the next big sale if you're interested. I feel it's different enough to be worth trying out. I will note that there is a big update planned for the 12th, so maybe wait until the reviews of that update come out to decide.

To be more specific, i i talk to anyone who has played Terraria, even casually and ask them what the first thing that come to mind when i say dimly lit, purple torched, pink brick, underground area with spike traps and skeletons. The first thing that come to mind is obviously the dungeon. I greatly enjoyed most of the trailer, my main gripes being the dungeon and the boss witht the purple robe and purple fireball attacks that seems to be based in the dungeon area *cough* cultist leader *cough*
Everything else looked very interesting, and as a long time wizard myself i always love seeing new and interesting magic systems in games or other media.

Never insulted it, I was asking an honest question to make sure that i didnt participate in the moral bankrupcy that seems so common in the gaming industry nowadays

Dim dungeons with skeletons and spikes is really a very old RPG trope. Terraria definitely took that one and went from there, hence they just called it "dungeon" since many people knew what to expect from that, in comparison to e.g. "jungle dungeon". The dungeon in Terraria rolls on different colours and purple is not the only colour it can have. There are 3 variants (blue, green and pink).

Honestly, I came here with the same question the OP had. I just saw the trailer on youtube and what sold me was the dinos. Love me some dino riding/raising/fighting in video games. I also love Terraria (and Starbound when it was good), but was cautious of this being a "glorified Terraria mod". My thanks to the folks here clearing it up. I will pick this game up and support it.

Cheers, and stay classy, gamers :)

to be honest, the necromancer boss is well... a necromancer, he is not really based like the cultist, he uses dark powers with necromancy, very different from the cultist who is a fightt based on several eleements and lunar power.
