advice for hell

I can't seem to survive for long in Hell. I have decent upgraded gold armor and 1.5k gold arrows, but it seems everytime I die it's because i get ganged on by high tier enemies (like always rare or higher, might be an exaggeration). I cant find the portal and I cant beat the dungeon. advice?

Dig a hole that is only two blocks wide. The only creature that can attack you there is the Devourers, and if you have a decent lightning bolt, you can generally take them down before they get near the hole (because you don't need line of sight to call down the lightning). All the other creatures are either stationary or more than two blocks wide, so then you can make shallow jumps to hit them with your sword without leaving the hole, and there isn't anything they can do to attack you. If you dig multiple holes, or travel while digging underground, you can bypass most of the critters that would attack you. Also, if you use platforms when crossing the lava sections, then you can run across the platforms, and any creatures that are chasing you will fall down into the lava.

Thanks for the advice! I managed to survive by digging a tunnel straight through hell, and I got enough souls for the bone dragon. What are his attacks and moves?

I haven't actually reached him yet, but from what I have read, the best advice is to hit him from range with the golden bow after drinking a damage potion, while staying on the portal and jumping to avoid the fireballs. Supposedly, he won't use some of his attacks if you are on the portal.

For me rare devourers are the issue. I can take on any rare if i plan it well the devourer is the only exception since it can fly. Plus escaping it is near imposible once it sees you since it is almost as fast as i am even while holding shift. Then they try attacking in my direction making them catch up.

I even killed a legendary butcher. After all you can't kill what you can't reach.

by the way how do avoid falling into lava when yopou drop into hell for the first time in a world? There doesn't seem to be any reliable way to do that just trial and error. 5 times on 5 different worlds and only once have i been dropped into lava.

It happened again in a new world thankfully i had the icarus necklaace and was able to jump out. But that hell was just islands literally no large masses of land. It seems every new hell i go to is less and less solidi and more about lava oceans.

to avoid falling in lava easy just use dirt to make a path way across the lava and you won't ever have to worry about falling in.
