3 They can be randomly dropped by monsters(rarely) or found deep enough underground.
4 I had thought they did provide defens but only for certain damage types but i may be wrong. It may simply be a design choice or a lack of being implemented yet. Having more health in a game is similar to haveing actual defense but it makes regen less effective. It also has other consequences that i cant recall at the moment.
5 Underground in mini dungeons. you'll see a cage you need to hit. there will be butchers guarding them.
6 I think it has to be scrolled over in the hotbar so that it appears that your player is holding it while not attacking.
Multiplayer will likely be out in within the next few weeks but its hard to say because I could have said the same thing a month ago. Multiplayer has been unexpectedly difficult for the developers to implement. We'll just have to be patient.

oh man. it takes YEARS to get that deep!
Eventually you can get a neclace that lets you jump super high and a amulet that lets you take no fall damage. then you can really race up and down fast.
