How does one combine chipped gems?

Am I missing a crafting table of some kind? I cannot combine chipped rubies to make a ruby.

You need a jewelry table, you can craft it at the advanced crafting table for 6 wood and 1 chipped ruby.

And if anyone knows how to get gems... I be would so appreciative. I cannot dig deep enough before I hit this purple dungeon that seems to span the entire length of the world I play in. So I've just been killing slimes en mass.

Just dig left or right. And then down again. Dungeons is not very long.
