As for the quest, well... its hard to say, it help a lot for people begginning, that thing I did not like is the gift you received for doing those simple quest. I would have prefer collecting everything bymyself then receiving all of those items/mats
As for the tutorial quests, they are optional but they also give you a little kickstart into mats and the "rep" (cup with wings) whatever that is to be used for.
I much prefer that to the likes of terraria where in order to find out even the bare essentials you pretty much have to tab out the game and check a wiki.
To me any game that decides to use a wiki over ingame info is inherrently flawed as they are actively pushing the player away from actually playing which should be the purpose of making a game.
This would be very cool. Make it its own little mini biome.
I think the crystal is a bit out of place myself, but appreciate the quests. Maybe it should be one of those green aliens instead that finds you after you crash? The size should definately be a little smaller.
First of all you get fame by doing them which when I remember correctly does at least one thing: increasing the occurrence of higher rarity enemies.
The other main reason is that this whole tutorial/quest system is developer intended the way it is and it's kinda a big deal. Depending on what it is you can't just say "I don't like this big feature x in game x so i'll just ignore it". I knew they wanted to make some kind of quest system. I didn't know that THIS is what they meant by that. If you skip it you will miss out on those dumb rewards and therefore not be on same terms with players who don't skip it.
You also may have noticed that the quests have a "star rating" up to 7 stars and that we currently have a bunch of 0-star quests and that one 1-star quest. And I mean, I can't know for sure, it's just a logical conclusion of mine but given those conditions it's very likely that the devs plan to add a whole bunch of quests to handhold you as far as it can get which takes a lot of the freedom and exploration.
They could have made a basic tutorial in the options which you can look up anytime and make that crystal talk about lore directed stuff which then triggers thoughts like "Oh, it might be possible that I find inhabitants somewhere" instead of quests that tell you "Go free Chloridians".
Also checking a game's wiki is the player's own choice and they can decide what they want to look up whereas having an active quest telling you what to do gives you an unpleasant feeling of obligation and pressure.
And I think some of you were misunderstanding it as I also don't like the idea of that green crystal itself. But no, I was only talking about that tutorial and quest system alone. I just don't care about the crystal whatsoever. And I just wanted to see if ppl feel the same about it as I do or maybe tell me some positive stuff so that system doesn't make me feel as bad but I guess I can't get around with writing much then.. meh..
On the wiki thing I personally feel that any game that relies on tabbing to a wiki to find out info rather than giving it in game is a bad design choice. Yes they are a useful resource to have access to but they should never be considered the primary source of info on ingame content and progress.
The crystal would maybe be better being an actual NPC but we don't know if it will at somepoint give a quest that reveals it's actually a deity or whatever and tasks you to free it somehow.
Likewise the quests are barebones and leave plenty of room to be fleshed out. Hopefully fame will be obtainable by doing other things, such as rescuing chloridians or slaying bosses.
