I don't believe that Cat is dead, because they always says how she "forgot them" and this would be pointless if she wasn't alive.
-She never seems to show up in the real world, since the monster family shows up at the very end.
She doesn't show up in the real world because she is the playable character? She is alive? You can see her, you are playing with her.
-The monster family recognizes her and even say she has been there before. Is that her personal purgatory? Why would she be trapped if it wasn't her direct fault, she was forgiven and forgave herself?
Yes and no. I think that yes, she felt guilty deep down but at the same time the monsters wanted to be remembered.
-Is that what the car was meant to signify or is there something else?
I believe the car at the end is just Cat facing her closure, facing the terrible scene that (maybe) caused her trauma and memory loss.
-Are Babyface, the Sphinx and creepy mask Benjamin her true family or just something out of her... maybe-ghost mind?
I think most of the characters represent a feeling. Not a feeling that Cat's family true felt, but what she think they did. The only monster character who seems to represent someone directly is the masked Benjamin.
-Did Cat grow up? Or is teen Cat just her monster form, the monster of passive-agressiveness?
I still think that she was alive and had a life after the trauma growing up and etc. BUT your theory of teen Cat being her monster form is really great, it would be a real twist into the plot if it was proved true.
-Who are the grubs and the huge caterpillar? What was up with that book talking about witches?
That's somethink I don't know. I felt like the caterpillar would have a bigger impact in the game, but she didn't ): And where is this book? I don't remember it.
And I agree with you, I think the Theater was a mistake and may stress out some...less motivated players. But this game is great, I'll play it again soon because now that I have the bigger picture, looking at the small details will feel great.
That being said, the monsters were warped interpretations of what she forgot. Babyface (both of them) were her unborn twin brothers, the dog Faust was the doctor for their mother, the Sphinx was her mother (who lost her Kid aka Cat), and Benjamin was the only one who's name stayed the same (still not sure if he was her actual father or like a stepdad). The house was where she was born and raised, hence why they kept saying she returned, but twice it was said that the house was nothing more than a memory. As for the other creatures and/or items, they could have some deeper meaning, but I figured they were just there to guide the way. The only one that really stood out was the attached wolves and the seasons they represented, and how the Sphinx didn't separate them the way they wanted linked to Cat feeling like her parents were taking the seasons away if they moved to the city.
So, it could be purgatory, it could be a nightmare, it could be a Alice in Wonderland type of mental trip a la her "magical" scarf, I thought perhaps it was a coma type situation where Cat had to confront what landed her in one in order to wake up - especially when you consider seeing her family living happily as you exit the house before the flaming car at the end.
Basically the meaning of the game is whatever you perceive it to be.
She calls you a liar and moves on. You don't get a game over or anything.
That scene made me really sad for some reason? Like, when she takes the larve away and he's all 'You're my best friend! <3', and then you just see the horrible shadow.... yeah. I was upset :L
