I used a dual stick Logitech controller; it automatically set things up so that the right stick is used for turning and the left stick for movement/strafing.
EDIT: Just confirmed for my myself that it's old fashioned D-input, so you're Xbox 360 controller ain't gonna work, just the Logitech controller switched to D-input.
Blast from the past again...picked up the GoG version, and was just looking for this same info. So I need to switch my F310 to Dinput mode for this? Heh. It does read the stick axes properly (and the triggers are the 'Z' axis, rather than being read as buttons)...may try using the above pic to see if I can map it still in X mode or something.
