There's a path to the right of the door that should curve all the way around to a large hill against a wall.
The path contains numerous enemies.
Around there should be a big hulking pyramid guard curled up or stood.
Near there is the cliff edge that leads you back to the door that requires the amulet.
He usually is stood or curled up on the big embankment.

BUT, I was to use one of the giant crystals to climb back behind the level and this is what I found:
There are actually 3 other clockwork guardians / bosses (4 total). They are in similar loops adjacent to the normal one - all filled with monsters. I killed these other bosses and they just dropped a bunch of amulets as normal (all the same), so I was able to collect an amulet and find my way back to the door (which was tricky because there is only one door and you can't see it from the edge of the level).
The outside of the level is composed of about 8 tiles of the same geometry - you can circle the entire thing by climbing on the back of the mountains (facing the outside of the level).
It's a real pain to do this, and it probably took me over 4 hours to make my way around the level and kill the bosses. The most time consuming part by far was finding just the right spots to climb behind the level.
In conclusion, there is a work-around if your boss gets bugged and isn't there - however it's really tedious and there no reason to go there unless you're bugged. It also seems theoretically possible you could fall into one of these other areas when reaching level 9, so if you can't find a door, you're in the wrong loop.
