GoG Version Works for Me
The Steam version of Sacrifice stopped working for me when I got a new computer and monitor, like 2 years ago.

With the steam version, my issue was the game wouldn't launch to the title screen. It went black for like 3 seconds after I launched then closed the app and reverted to desktop.

GoG version works great, I just don't have widescreen resolution support.

You don't. It's a patch for the game, that allows you to choose resolution in game. There was some older method where you changed values in registry, but that method only made image appear as 16:9 but the content(creatures, buildings, other stuff would not render outside of 4:3 window which would result in creatures disappearing on sides mostly and appear closer to middle of the screen which is quite annoying).

You just download widescreen-fix and extract it to Sacrifice folder, and you should have widescreen resolutions to choose in options in game menus.

Mind that game will always start in 640x480, and the resolution is switched only after loading the map. There is another "patch" to have main menu in another resolution, but it's another package and you need specific package for specific resolution.

Thank you.

I doubt that I will ever play multiplayer, but can you play multiplayer with others who have the patch?

Widescreen is irrevelant for multiplayer purposes so yes. You just need 60 FPS lock as anything higher equals cheating(you can play on any FPS amount in singleplayer, no one cares, but you have to deal with all the bs that comes with it). Community doesn't really play in original Sacrifice anymore, though. People are playing via SacEngine, which quite feels like emulator that is running Sacrifice assets instead of Sacrifice itself.
