Sacrifice

Difficulty paths
After watching numerous lets plays and studying the missions, units and spells, i thnk i know what difficulty the different god paths are.

Pyro: Very Easy
James:Easy
Persephone:Medium
Charnel:Hard
Stratos: Very Hard

Anyone agree with me?

havent played this since like 2001, but from what i remember, what you're saying isnt true at all. not 100% sure though since i never played with pyro or james only, but i did play charnel all the way through many times and didnt find it particularly hard. it all boils down to what units/spells you get from which missions. for example i remember the charnel scythes and locusts being almost a little OP because of their insane life leech, making them the obvious mission 1 choice. they did nerf them in some patch though.

geez, just thinking about this game makes me want to buy this again and play it since i've lost the original cd years ago.

i thought difficulty goes from left to right, but i'm no expert.

like i said, im pretty sure the order of the gods has nothing to do with the difficulty. not 100% but pretty sure, lol.

Too bad, would make sense, because the game does not have difficulty setting elsewhere if i remember correctly :)

There is also a difference between difficulty based on the tools to the gods give you to work with (i.e. creatures and spells) and the tasks they send you on. Things like havining you fight with or without allies, or fighting more than one wizard on a map.

I think Stratos might have been the hardest. He had a few crazy tasks that I dont think other gods did. There was the mission where you dont have an altar. There was that final fight against James with all the crazy ambushes. There was even that mission where you had you use the stupid portal, where you couldnt even convert souls on the other side until you built a shrine.

Overall, the most difficult and tedious thing in the game to me is getting souls to change hands. Killing the enemy wizard while keeping his army alive his hard, and getting red souls that pop up before the wizard is dead is impossible.

Edit: I forgot that Stratos also had that crazy mission where you lose if eithier of Pyros champions build too many manaliths. Stratos really was the king of crazy gameplay rules.

The Stratos campaign definitely felt the hardest though, but also felt the most rewarding. I did find his final mission against Charnel a bit underwhelming. After playing Stratos for eight missions, (and still feeling bitter about banishing James) I reloaded and took Charnel for the final one and his last mission felt more difficult and more like a "end of the world" kind of battle.

Pyro's campaign is a solid second choice for me regarding difficulty. His mission 7, 8 (against Jadugarr and his Silverbacks) and 9 (with Sorcha's betrayal) can be brutal.

Personally I would say from easy to hard: James - Persephone - Charnel - Pyro - Stratos

Playing the game in 2021 I agree that Stratos has the hardest campaign but for me Charnel was the easiest by far.

Charnel is a bit lacking in damage output early on but once he gets a combination of "Raise the Dead" and "Dead eyes" he becomes unstoppable.

Raise the dead is the most OP spell in the game. It costs almost no mana and it has a very short recharge so you can spam it over and over to keep resurrecting your troops. It doesn't matter how much stronger enemy units are when your units keep coming back from the dead.

Dead eyes are the best sniper unit in the game with long range, deadly accuracy and high damage output. A bunch of five or six of them will kill everything including enemy wizards very quickly. You actually don't need any other units because you can keep raising them from the dead over and over.

As if the killer combination of raise dead and dead eyes wasn't enough Charnel also gets the best wall spell in the game, a very good cloud spell, pit of shades and intestinal vapourisation. He has so much good stuff that the last few missions are trivial.

PSA: If you are playing the game in 2021 make sure to cap your framerate below 60Hz to prevent the AI from derping out. Setting desktop framerate to 60Hz may suffice.
