GPD Win?

Hi all!
It's been a while.
I was wondering if anyone has tried using CPUCores on a GPD Win.
From what I remember previously, Tim noted to me that CPUCores brings greatest performance improvements to devices that have to rely highly on their CPU for games.
I am currently getting GPD Win (Windows 10 tiny Nintendo DS-sized gaming laptop). It has Atom quad-core x7 8700 processor, Intel HD 405 integrated graphics and 4gb ddr3 RAM.
I do not have it yet, but I have already seen people on YouTube running some pre-2010 3D games on it with decent FPS, including Stalker, Fallout 3 (and it's addons), Portal 2, Half-Life 2 and many others. It even runs Overwatch, GTA V and CS:GO, but at a rather unpleasant FPS of around 15-25 for these.
So overall, at least in theory, this device seems to match the description of one of the situations where CPUCores can help out a lot:
Quad-core, but low-mid setup, integrated graphics.
Would it help with a game like Overwatch though? From my perspective, Overwatch doesn't look very graphics-heavy, but a dedicated Intel 405 might have a slightly different worldview..

So I was wondering if anyone has got that device already and tested its performance in some games with and without CPUCores. StartupTim, do you think CPUCores will help with that device?

Hey there!

I'm looking to buy a GPD Win myself just to do testing with CPUCores. Because the GPD Win is so tiny, has no discrete GPU, and the Intel Atom 8700 is such a basic processor, I would tell people that if money is tight then don't get CPUCores since it isn't the ideal hardware setup. However, if $20 isn't a problem and they don't mind being a guinea pig... :)

If results look promising then I might even modify CPUCores and have a special "GPD Win" section of the program. Or maybe make a GPD Win version of it.

Right now there is 1 user testing it with GPD Win and they are seeing this: 10% increase in low-end FPS and 5% increase in high-end FPS.

Obviously results are very game-dependent as CPUCores doesn't affect any GPU anything. So your results will vary based on the game itself.

Hi!
I agree that the specs do not look promising, but I was surprised to see some of the titles I mentioned to run at all. Even more so, I was surprised to see some of the titles to be playable.
However, I am planning to first do the heatsink mod on the GPD Win, so its cooling will improve.

If it actually shows improvements with CPUCores, then I could recommend it on Reddit where there are multiple other people interested in improving Win performance, so then other people will be interested in testing GPD Win with CPUCores too:)

Anyone else tested this? Would love to take advantage of any performance enhancement (although the GPD Win has exceeded my performance expectations to be honest).

I used it on the GPD win a lot (I bought one just for this) and it works. That being said, the GPD win is pretty limited in general especially due to heat throttling.

well, brace yourself for GPD Win 2, which has over twice the processing power (although now only 2 cores instead of 4), and the heat throttling is eliminated completely, unless you TDP it up to 10-11W :)

Wow, just read up on it!

I actually have the original GPD Win that has joysticks as well as the newer GPD Win that has the big screen and 8GB ram.

Ill def buy the new one, it has a m.2 drive! Thou am sad it is only dual core despite being overall faster.

Look up videos made by Phawx - he made comparisons between Win 1 and 2 and actually this smaller number of cores doesn't seem to be much of a hindrance - in all videos I remember seeing comparing the two, the performance of Win 2 is at least 2x better, sometimes more. Sometimes 3x better.

By the "Newer GPD Win with 8GB RAM and bigger screen", do you mean GPD Pocket? There was someone selling unofficial upgrades for the Win, but they looked quite dodgy and only on Chinese websites. I don't think anyone from outiside China got these.
