the avernum/avadum series
or the tactical jrpg genre: final fantasy tactics, ogre battle, the disgaea series
OR (slightly off-topic), if you're more the hardcore gamer type,
you could look into roguelikes (my personal all-time favourite is Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup):
they're not squad-based, but they're turn-based and have TONS of strategic depth (and permadeath as well, which gives the concept of strategy whole new levels of meaning!),
but you'll have to get past the simple ASCII/tiles graphics (well worth it imo).
Squad based tactical TBS:
- XCOM EU that just came out last year
- Jagged Alliance series
- All the old Xcom games are available through Steam
Those are games where you can go into missions with a fixed number of squadmates and complete it from start to finish, swapping them out between missions. They're the closest kind of games you will find to FOT.
- Heroes of Might & Magic thru HOMM5; HOMM6 techically counts but I hate the game and couldn't ever mention it without that warning. These games center on one or more heroes that have limited movement over a map with armies of monsters. It's a blend of RPG and TBS.
- Fallout, Fallout 2, Arcanum (I think?), the ancient SSI gold box games all have characters that have limited move points per turn. They're traditional CRPGs in the sense they focus more on the character building aspect as opposed to mission tactics.
- Icewind Dales, Baldurs Gate and Dragon Age series are games where you have a select number of characters/heroes that engage in real-time combat with an isomentric view that is pausable.
- Master of Orion 2 is a Explore/Expand/Exploit game but has turn based, point-move ship combat. You build your own ships if you want or use premades. There have been a number of attempts to make similar games and the Sins of a Solar Empire group seem to be closest imo.
Of them all, the new XCOM: EU reminds me of FOT the most. It has a little less variety in its tech tree but it makes that up in loyalty to the original, since it pretty much mirrors the original tech tree. The Jagged Alliance games as well but they never held my interest much for some reason. Dunno why really. Still worth props.
