Custom Portraits?
I know I can have a cutom portrait for my own character but is there a way to add custom portraits for companions, or somehow make a new recruitable npc with a custom image?

Just necro-ing this thread incase anyone still cares...

The answer is "Yes". You can change the portrait of existing recruits, or other characters (or create your own characters if you use the mod tools).

I describe the process in the readme of a custom portrait pack I made recently:

It's also posted at NMA, but I think you need to be registered and logged in to download forum attachments there:

Basically, to change recruit portraits:

1) Copy the new portrait .zar file you want to use to a temporary location and rename it to the filename for the relevant recruit:

Farsight = CORE_rec_hf03.zar
Stitch = CORE_rec_hm09.zar
Robin = CORE_rec_hm01.zar
Jax = CORE_rec_hm05.zar
Torn = CORE_rec_hf11.zar
Trevor = CORE_rec_hm11.zar
Kevin = CORE_rec_hm12.zar
Brian = CORE_rec_hm06.zar
Rage = CORE_rec_hm03.zar
Rebcca = CORE_rec_hf15.zar
Ice = CORE_rec_hf05.zar
Jo = CORE_rec_hf06.zar
Mandy = CORE_rec_hf10.zar
Fleetfoot = CORE_rec_tr05.zar
Target = CORE_rec_tr01.zar
Keith = CORE_rec_tr03.zar
Stein = CORE_rec_hm04.zar
Stumpy = CORE_rec_hm14.zar
Stoma = CORE_rec_hm08.zar
Stevie = CORE_rec_hf02.zar
Beth = CORE_rec_hf12.zar
Slicer = CORE_rec_tr04.zar
Sharon = CORE_rec_tr02.zar
Frank = CORE_rec_go04.zar
Babs = CORE_rec_go01.zar
Billy Bob = CORE_rec_go03.zar
Shaav = CORE_rec_dc01.zar
Krldraav = CORE_rec_dc02.zar
Shriek = CORE_rec_dc03.zar
Mother = CORE_rec_dc04.zar
Creeper = CORE_rec_ra01.zar
Pain = CORE_rec_ra02.zar
Hurt = CORE_rec_ra03.zar
Malice = CORE_rec_ra04.zar
Boomer = CORE_rec_ra05.zar
Dillon = CORE_rec_go02.zar
Harold = CORE_rec_go06.zar
Martin = CORE_rec_go05.zar
Max = CORE_rec_hm07.zar
Alice = CORE_rec_hf07.zar
Ed = CORE_rec_hm15.zar
Chuck = CORE_rec_sm01.zar
Toni = CORE_rec_sm03.zar
Bob = CORE_rec_sm04.zar
Cookie = CORE_rec_sm05.zar
Kaisa = CORE_rec_hf13.zar
Fran = CORE_rec_hf01.zar
Karl = CORE_rec_hm16.zar
John = CORE_rec_hm10.zar
Vector = CORE_rec_hf04.zar
Mac = CORE_rec_rv01.zar
Dos = CORE_rec_rv02.zar
Hardrive = CORE_rec_rv03.zar
Seedee = CORE_rec_rv04.zar
Debbie = CORE_rec_hf14.zar
Slim = CORE_rec_hm02.zar
Shaky = CORE_rec_hm13.zar
Peta = CORE_rec_hf16.zar
Box = CORE_rec_hf08.zar
Clarise = CORE_rec_hf09.zar
HR1205 = CORE_rec_robby.zar
Pip = CORE_rec_pipboy.zar
Riddick = CORE_rec_riddick.zar
Joe = CORE_rec_joeGrimm.zar
Jim = CORE_rec_jimGrimm.zar

2) Open the archive file /core/gui_0.bos using 7zip - free download from http://www.7-zip.org
3) Within the archive, go to /gui/char and extract the original portrait file to a backup location (incase you want to change back later)
4) Now copy the new portait file that you renamed in step 1 and paste it into /gui/char within the archive, replacing the original
5) Confirm that you want to overwrite and then close/exit the archive

You can probably also change the portraits for most other characters in the game:

Look in /core/locale/game/characters.txt and find the character whose portrait you want to change.
Make a note of the code for that character e.g. Farsight is "name_CORE_rec_hf03"
To get the filename of the portrait image, remove "name_" and add ".zar" to the end e.g. Farsight = CORE_rec_hf03.zar
Then just replace that file within the archive as outlined above (remember to backup the originals!)
