Solo: real-time
Duo: mix of both
Party: turn-based
For co-op campaign:
Real-time
I would argue the game is designed around co-op real-time gameplay. So much of it just works better that way, but it's really only feasible that way with multiple human players each controlling one party member. If you're playing by yourself, it's basically impossible to use real-time without killing your own squad. The problem here is Tactics is played by single-players 99.9% of the time.
Playing real-time solo is remarkably fun and challenging if you know what you're doing. I use a lot of sneaking early on, and am very selective on which weapons I use. Running away and hiding for a bit is a perfectly valid option here lol. Plus you can use all the skill books on one person which makes him/her very well-rounded.
Duo is a nice mix between the two modes. I have one small guns/energy/doctor/lockpick who I station at a good location for long-range sniping, and another with big guns/melee/pilot/throwing to run around harassing enemies and drawing them into the sniper fire. You can do this in real-time if you set everything up right. The spacebar (pseudo-pause) is your friend here.
Normally you play on real time, and when you need precision (to target the specific enemy you want), you press an assigned key to enter the turn based mode.
I think the default is Enter, but you can change the input. I assigned as space.
This is one of the few games that lets you switch between them and it does it quite well.
Individual turn-based mode is better imo because it's a more realistic and natural way to discern who gets to go next. It's based off of your Perception skill, so a high Perc. means you would get to act before anyone with a lower Perc., regardless of if it's friend or foe.
Individual turn based takes way too long in my opinion, as if turn based mode in this game doesn't take enough time already.
