It is a sad day when your question is closing in on it's post-date with no answer and your only reminded of it's existence by somebody who has the same question. xD
I also don't recaall the name of the mod, but there was one that let you pick any of the races at the start of the game I quite liked that one. let me open up with a Deathclaw.
also boonville was pretty popular back in the days of gamespy for those who wanted to roleplay

well not really a mod but it still modifies the game to run at basically any resolution your graphiccard+screen supports (works at least with the original v1.27 and gog-version)
