I'm sorry to hear that. It's a shame you might miss out on a great game because of it, but I think Ice-Pick Lodge are trying to avoid the language issues that plagued the original release back in 2005. (In case you're unaware, the original translation from Russian to English really missed the mark and was very underwhelming, since the game itself focuses a lot on the writing). They are probably focusing on making the translations that ARE available as good as possible.

Anyway, I hope you'll consider buying it in the future because in my opinion, it really is worth it.

Yaz, I am sorry to inform you that there are unlikely to be any other translations. The reasons for this decision are rather straightforward: Pathologic is extremely text-heavy, so translating it is actually an exprensive endeavour. So expensive that we don't seem to have the funds for that right now.

Then there is the matter of quality control. Sadly, we're no polyglots, while Pathologic is text-focussed. I'm only fluent in Russian and English; and my personal experiences with the translation of text-focussed games (like Planescape: Torment or Dear Esther, for example) is that they can end up extremely dissatisfying. Even if we found the funds to hire the best professionals, there would not be a way for us to double-check the quality of localization without expending a ton of resources.

The Russian translator of Umberto Eco's works maintains close communication with him (I'm not sure if they're friends, but her translation process definitely involves a certain level of collaboration with the author himself). This is the bar we're setting for localization—because the text quality is so important for the game that it makes sense to compare it to literature.

I'm not saying it's impossible. It is. There is a chance that stars will align and we'll find the right people to be in charge of aditional translations (and the funds to hire them). But this is definitely something that we cannot promise, sorry.

Alphyna, thank you for reply my discussion.

I noticed that "Pathologic" (Retail) was Italian (of course I say the subtitles), because since this game focuses heavily on the story, and to have it in a language they do not know is really frustrating and unnecessary purchase for now (I hope) for those not his language, it is like buying a movie with another language would have no way to buy it.

I hope (soon) that in the future "to update the game" with other supported languages, for the good of all and enjoy it all.

If there was my language I pre-ordered now.

EDIT: I do my best with english, sorry. :/

The problem is that, unfortunately, we don't have rights to use Italian and German translations of the game. They belong to the publishers who translated the game back in 2005.

But you can not demand the rights for translations of Italian and Germany?

How do you have the rights for the complete game but not the text? Its not remastered if english only, thats crap. That will not only me wo will rant against the fail of translations after the original.
Will the new Pathologic will have also only english? I hate devs who made games in english only especially games with focus on much text. Its not only you but this is a direction of developing games who f4cks me of, its a plague.

How its about made it modable for comunity translations such as localization/strings.xml?
Diabolicus Oct 24, 2015 @ 5:09am
I only regret that this game needs to be understood by all the people because it is a game based on the mysteries / plot / characters etc ..., many people (who do not know those languages supported) will not understand the game.

First of all, it's already been explained why as of right now, the game will only be released in English, Russian and Polish - not only does it have legal reasons, but they also want to ensure a level of quality control which just wasn't there in the original release. (Check out all the backlash the original translation got and you'll understand why.)

You also have to remember that Ice-Pick Lodge are still focusing effort and resources in creating the 2016 remake (which will be translated to German, by the way), and the fact that they're even giving us this remaster to begin with is something to be grateful for. They could've just released the old, flawed version and called it a day if they wanted to.

English isn't my first language either, but I'm not gonna be sad that there's no Swedish version. You just have to consider if you think the game might be worth playing anyway, despite it unfortunately not being available in your language. I hope you'll give it a try though, because it's a really good game.
