Workshop characters alt skins crashing or freezing the game, or are simply being skipped and unselectable
Can someone please help me? I'm new to this game as I learned about how fun it is from YT as it's very similar to Smash Bros but moddable.

The next issues only applies to workshop characters in general, the vanilla characters had no issues:
The game freezes when 2 players are using the same skin, which is automatic if you haven't changed yours and added another CPU player who plays that same character, making it impossible to play with 3 or more of the same character.
I want to play mods so badly but they crash from many minor stuff. It doesn't affect just a specific mod, but a lot of mods which were working perfectly for other YouTubers.
For example: the Noelle Holiday mod Transcend skin crashes with the error:
___________________________________________
############################################################################################
FATAL ERROR in
action number 1
of Step Event0
for object cs_playercursor_obj:

second index out of bounds request 0,-2 maximum size is 1
############################################################################################
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
called from - gml_Script_get_color_taunt_value (line 7)
called from - gml_Script_update_char_color (line 279)
called from - gml_Object_cs_playercursor_obj_Step_0 (line 1078)

And it only happens to me for some reason. Tried contacting the developers of these mods and they didn't experience these issues.
And another weird thing, after reinstalled few mods again, they behaved differently because I could no longer choose the same skin using another player, preventing the freezes.
But most of the skins were no longer selectable, it just skips them.
When I installed another mod, the issues I talked about just returned, both the crashing and the freezing ones. It behaves so weird.
I bought the game a few weeks ago, tried to re-install it twice already. I'm on the latest release version of the game, am I doing something wrong? Does anyone else experiencing something similar?

Found a fix for this issue! This is a bug that only the Rivals Devs can fix.

To fix it, follow these steps:
1. Unsubscribe from every workshop mod you have in the game.
2. Subscribe to at least 24 stages. (this must be done first!)
3. Subscribe to whatever else you want now, characters should not have this bug anymore.

It worked for me, I tried multiple ways in figuring out why it suddenly got fixed when I downloaded a bunch of mods and found out that it has to do with the index of the workshop item being around less than 24.
If you unsubscribe from any of the initial 24 stages, it will happen again, so keep them.

just got here from your reply !! tysm, it's a bit unintuitive but i guess it makes sense code-wise
thanks again !!!
It appears that Steam Cloud Backup will mess with the indexes upon restarting Steam, make sure to disable it.

I've been trying to get this to work for hours, but it just leads to the same result. The first 20 or so characters still have missing alts. Do the stages have to be ones you haven't subbed to before? Does Steam itself need to be restarted? Is there some indexing file that needs to be deleted to be remade?
