Selecting CPU Characters

When I set the other player slots to CPU in versus or practice modes, I can't select their characters as the game still assumes I have other controllers plugged in. Is there a way to set CPU characters with only one controller?

First, you need to have your character selected. Then you pick up the other coins (you know they look like coins) that correspond to other player slots and just drop 'em onto a character as you would for your own.
