Honestly, get a controller. There are no "good" keyboard controls

You can't play this game on a keyboard and hope it will go well. If you have a ps3/ps4/XBox/XBox One controller you can just use that. It'll be so much better.

Nah it's probably very do-able. Same thing happens in fighting games when everyone is using arcade sticks. People just automatically assume the unpopular control method is worse and then pressure everyone new into picking one up too. Meanwhile they've been using arcade sticks for decades so obviously they are more comfortable with them.

I use keyboard on games like SF4 and can do all inputs, combos and plinking just fine where I never feel limited.

It's probably the same here with Smash games and controllers. In a normal Smash game it's a problem because of the many trajectories possible can't be met with the keyboard, but Aether has less and doesn't require you to have something like the gamecube stick.

Here's the layout I use
[shift]: run
[z]: jump
[x]: attack
[c]: special
[v]: dodge
and then arrow keys to move
it isn't great but it works.
Tell me you come up with something better
I use this, and so far this is the most comfortable for me
W- Up
A- Left
S- Down
D- Right
Space- Jump
O- Normal
P- Special
[- Strong
NumP4- Select
NumP5- Back

I use WASD too, but use the Num Bloq for the attacks.
I think that in a game like this the keyboard is very usable, the only thing I seem to not be able to do consistently is a short hop, I always press the key a bit too long.

I've been using WASD to move, shift to run, space to dodge/parry, then jkl; for jump, attack, special, and strong respectively (though those last four could be pretty interchangeable - that order still feels odd to me, and I occasionally mix up the specials and strongs).

Honestly, as long as you can use the movement, run, and dodge commands simultaneously (run is ESSENTIAL to have easy access to), you'll have a control scheme that will eventually work for you. I haven't tried this game with a controller yet so I don't have a baseline, but I can 3-stock lvl9 cpus pretty consistently, so my control scheme is at least functional.

I have a odd layout.
Q: Attack
W: Strong
E: Dodge
R: Special
Arrow keys to move
Run is ctrl but thinking of changing it.
Probably wont work for everyone but I do fine with it.
