Practise those, and voila, u gited gud.
Wavedashing is basically jump, and immediately after jumping do a dodge either down, down and to the left, or down and to the right. You can also do this just as you go above on a platform for super swaggy acceleration.
For learning characters, your best bet would be to either watch someone play, or look at all the moves and experiment trying to combo.
Besides watching the guides I have one thing for you. This game is really based around unconvential combos and there isn't block option like in most fighting games. If you don't want to take damage you have to dodge out of the way most of the time.

He's generally spammy, and is relatively two-dimensional when it comes to a lot of aspects. He only becomes interesting when you learn some cool techniques, like burst cancelling and are able to apply it to a match.
