You can block.

Select Kragg and press the special button to pull out a block.

You can parry. which is ultimately a block. Evey fighting game has a block. usually there is a disadvantage. Example, you might still lose some health, blocking while walking backwards makes you lose ground, and In DBZ budokai you lose energy. Most fighting games give some sort of disadvantage to blocking or else people would play way to defensively and it would make for a beyond annoying fighting game.

Back to Rivals. You can block by parrying. It stops the move and opens up room for you to attack (just like a block in any fighting game). This games disadvantage to blocking is its timing. You can't just sit there and hold block, you have to time it. If you time it the advantage can sometimes win you a match.

So there is blocking. If you have trouble timing it then find a character who parries better. Forsburn has a long parry. Only problem with this form of blocking is when lag interferes. It ruins the timing of the parry making it sometimes impossible to perform.

All joking aside, the lack of blocking does have some impacts on the game, most notably that this game doesn't have any frame 1 defensive action. Parrying is frame 3 (4 for Forsburn), and I don't have the frame data on rolls and air dodges but both also definitely have some startup. This means that there can be times where something is not a "true" combo but you have no escape options because your defensive options aren't fast enough, which makes pressure in this game very strong.

you still can't block though

yes you can. A block succsefully stops an attack. A parry can stop an attack. therefore, a parry is a block. Whether you think it's a good blocking mechanic is a different topic.

that is objectively wrong

a parry is not a block. it's a parry. Parries are different than blocks. Blocks do not require a specific timing, and after blocking an attack, neither player is really at an advantage or disadvantage aside from one of them being +frames. A parry requires very strict timing, but rewards the player for pulling it off either by damaging the opponent or leaving them vulnerable. I agree with OP that not having a block is really frustrating. Would like to see blocking implemented sometime in the future.

A parry is where you're blocking an attack in a certain way to give you a chance to countermove. It is not truly a block but it is a defensive maneuver. I'm going to use Smash's block as example. Nobody uses a full bubble block in Smash. They either use it to repel projectiles or protect themselves from very hard attacks.

So the block from Smash is meant to be used like a parry while keeping the blocking feature if need be. This game however requires you to move quickly, avoid attacks or parry them. If you can't time your parries, then it's on you.

parrying isn't blocking lol

If you don't want to see parrying as a form of blocking that's fine. we have different opinions. This game has different options to replace the blocking feature. Enough options that you don't need to block. Sounds innovative! If you still reply "Still no blocking" then what's your point? There are more than enough ways to get out of situations getting rid of the need for a blocking mechanic. there are also enough replies trying to disagree with you on something. This should say something to you. Maybe quit thinking of how to block and instead think of ways to not put yourslf in a bad situation or how to get out of one. This game isn't Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Smash bros, or any fighting game that you might have played. This is Rivals of Aether, a game where you need to come up with other options.

Btw this isn't hatemail, i'm just trying to prove a point.

Blocking is for losers. Real men get comboed.

it's not a form of blocking
it's a specific niche defensive technique that has never replaced blocking in any fighting game ever because it's dumb
