Back to Rivals. You can block by parrying. It stops the move and opens up room for you to attack (just like a block in any fighting game). This games disadvantage to blocking is its timing. You can't just sit there and hold block, you have to time it. If you time it the advantage can sometimes win you a match.
So there is blocking. If you have trouble timing it then find a character who parries better. Forsburn has a long parry. Only problem with this form of blocking is when lag interferes. It ruins the timing of the parry making it sometimes impossible to perform.
So the block from Smash is meant to be used like a parry while keeping the blocking feature if need be. This game however requires you to move quickly, avoid attacks or parry them. If you can't time your parries, then it's on you.
Btw this isn't hatemail, i'm just trying to prove a point.
it's a specific niche defensive technique that has never replaced blocking in any fighting game ever because it's dumb
