Cant use custom characters

Can anyone help me download a custom character to the game? Because I just can't do it, every tutorial or whatever shows a gear next to the question mark but i dont have one. I have subscribed to some characters and i dont know what to do:(

You click on the top where it lists stock/time options (The bar where you edit rules in Smash games)

The last option is Workshop and you need to change it to “on” every time you make a lobby. But that should make the gear appear.

If you’re in a friend lobby then you need to wait until everyone joins before changing the option

You can only change the rules if you already have your friend in the lobby with you.

Then you open the top menu and set the options. After pressing ok on them, your friend also has to accept the settings since he'll get a message on their screen.

So the cog has disappeared for solos games when I want to play on my own
