Swift Rival seems a bit too steep for an unlockable...
I know this game was designed for more "hardcore" Smash fans, so some high skill rewards are to be expected I guess. but as I'm more "casual" it seems a little unfair that there's an unlockable for this. I feel like the second custom color should be a little easier to unlock. What are some other opinions out there?

Seems perfectly fair. If you want the prize work for it.

My issue is more with the fact that it forces you to "master" several characters I don't necessarily want to invest in and game the CPU AI which, to be frank, isn't what I signed up for. Custom colors aren't either (can't use them in ranked anyway,) but they're a nice, fun perk.

Take the "Ardent Rival" achievement, for instance. At least I can grind my way to that one if I really want to. The "Swift Rival" one requires hitting a certain skill threshold for several characters.

I guess I just don't like the fact that a multiplayer-focused game gates several unlockables behind very involved single-player achievements.

Indeed, unlockables are fun. But I personally feel the effort versus reward to be unbalanced in this particular instance.

I kind of agree. It's one thing to be rewarded for skill, but gaming the AI actually does become the best option in several instances. I don't think this achievement is very well-designed.

I find it extremely difficult to get 2:00 on several of the characters, and wish the gold ranks could be extended by 5 seconds each, but that may just be me.
(IE first four fights would go from gold 20 to 25, 5th fight from 40 to 50, overall from 2:00 to 2:30).

Plus, with how the AI is perfect at getting back on the stage if possible (and constant rolling), if you're not good at edgeguarding, it's almost impossible. >.<'

Basically. It kind of feels like the "Swift Rival" achievement is "How good are you at low percentage edgeguards?" with a dash of "hope the CPU doesn't perfect-parry my moves."

(Though in all fariness, it kind of feels like the CPU tends to parry more if you're spamming the same move.)

It's possible to unlock the second custom color slot by changing some things in appdata (AppData > Local > RivalsofAether > saves > progression), but it doesn't get you any achievements. This definitely isn't something you're supposed to do, so only do it if you really feel like you need those extra slots.

i will say that this achievement is a bit too steep, maybe just restrict it to getting gold on the final boss

Sorry for the bump, but I just want to say that the AI in story mode will always follow a certain starting pattern, allowing you to 0-to-death them fairly easily. For Example: Kragg can 0-to-death Zetterburn by Forward Rock Throw > F-tilt on rock > F-tilt but miss > F-special > jump cancel > N-air > F-Air and maybe another rock throw if your inputs were not to great.
Zetterburn also has an easy 0-to-death on his first stage: F-Special > F-Smash, super easy. May need another fireball to keep Maypull of stage but works like a charm. I'm not a great Smash player myself but but figuring out the patterns on the first 3 stages makes getting gold A LOT easier. Hope this helps ^-^

Also, getting gold on the final boss is basically what happens if you earn The Lone Rival achievement, making The Swift Rival almost redundant.

One I found was Orcane VS Kraig Usually can beat Kraig easily if I start with intercepting his jump and using FAir, then upon landing, hit him with UStrong twice, then when he lands try to hit him with NSpecial before going over to the puddle and using FStrong to kill him. It doesn't work every time, but I found this to be one of the fastest ways to kill him. ...but that's Orcane's FIRST battle.

The boss is actually super easy. Just pick Wrastor, position yourself above one eye and down smash over and over (and over and over... you get it). As for the other stages: The opponent that always kills my 2 min run is Forsburn. He is literally impossible to edgeguard early, making me waste half a minute on just one fight. I really want this achievement and the second color, but this story mode has almost ruined my joy for the game.

I can do it easily with Wrastor... except Forsburn's Wrastor's FIRST opponent, so that doesn't say much.

The first ones are easy, but later on? Ugh! I am good enough with Maypul to kill all the other characters relatively quickly, but then I have to beat Forsburn? Twice?! In approximately 45 seconds?!! Oh, how this game makes me suffer!

Well, enough whining for today. Back to getting my ass beat by this story mode.

The game gives you 20 seconds per life, allowing you to get gold with sub-optimal times for the last 2 fights if you can 0 to death the first 3, so I think this system is reasonable enough. You just need to study how the first 3 fights start then do ok in the last 2 fights.
