Destroy tortoise dens (Solved)
I built a ship to do this and it starts freezing up so I turn on my heaters and then the ship starts melting. I tried turning the heaters down, but it doesn't have much effect and the game offers no clues. Do I have to turn them down to 1? Does that number have no effect on how warm they get? Am I completely off course to be trying this stuff?

Perhaps the most annoying thing is when the button that turns things on freezes up or melts off and then you can't control your temperature manually. There probably is a gadget that can turn things on and off automatically but I don't know which one it is.

Short version of this post - I'm trying to destroy tortoise dens. What kind of parts should I build on my ship?

After I put this up I found the thread with the answer. What can I say I used google to search and it used to be good.

I used two chilling devices attached to a switch and I pretty much leaned against the tortoise dens as i killed them with the heated shot. They heated up as I shot them and the heat transfered to my ship so that I didn't really need heaters much. Its a good idea to put blocks around the switches because they are fragile and easily melt.

Unless your playing Programmer Captain, its generally better to manually control heater/cooler units. I usually run mine at strength 30-40 and turn it on only when I really need it. The trick is to heat up other parts then let the thermal transfer unfreeze the part thats iced... which usually means waiting a little bit. Remember the heaters affect multiple parts evenly, if only 1 part is freezing and you just turn it on until that one unfreezes you will still raise the temp of everything else & melt.

If your playing Programmer and can't manually control them, then you will probobly need to use multiple thermal sensors & set up very small thermal zones around you drones with multiple heaters/coolers. The thermal sensor only reports the tempature of itself so if you try to use it with a large area heater you will have the same problem of it not activating if only 1 part is cold or staying active too long & melting something.

As for destroying the Dens... I find 2 things make it alot easier. First destroy any nearby Frost Bombs (crystal looking things that generate a freeze aura around them) as that will give you better manuvering room. Then i usually just snipe at the dens with a longer ranged weapon. If you have to fight the toroise first, then i would build your drone with the expectation that something on the outer edge will get frozen... and ensure its not a thruster or component you absolutly need :P
