How To - ADD & INVITE my friend?

Require assistance to work out how to 1st add my firend and then how to invite him. I swear this game had an option to co-op? It was the only reason I bought it. We are both struggling to work out how to add eachother and then proceed to invte one or the other to a game?

Must we complete a number of scenarios? ... before seeing the option to add a friend.

If you anyone could shed some light, that would be greatly appreciated.

Add them to your steam friends list open you game and complete the prologue, then pause and go to lobby and find your friend or pause and click and invite button after completing the prologue.
