Xbox 360 Controller Problems
So the game loads and runs perfectly, but my wireless Xbox 360 controller does not get detected when playing the game. I tested it with SMB to make sure it's not broken and it works flawlessly, but for some reason doesn't like Psychonauts. What the hell, man?

Not all computer games are compatible with controllers and this is a pretty old game.

I have 3 different controllers, have played game with all of them. Recent controller is Logitech Wireless F710 and was playing the game yesterday with it. You can add this patch: http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/4952/ to change the icons to display the XBOX buttons instead of keyboard and mouse buttons. Really helps out a lot. Not sure if your problem is not actually being able to use the controller, in that case I don't know.

The problem is that I can't use the controller. I've looked around online and people say their 360 controllers work fine, and my friend tells me he played through the game with his 360 controller, so I know it can be done. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game twice now, and it's just pissing me off at this point.

I am having the same problem. The port looks like it was intended for 360 controller since the icons in game options clearly show a 360 controller. I don't have time tonight, but I'm going to try re-downloading Xpadder and see if that works for me tommorow.

Here is another program I have had success with before I had the current controllers I have. http://code.google.com/p/x360ce/
Copy the files in the .zip into the Psychonauts game directory and then open the executable. I think you can autodetect settings for your controller and then save the settings. If it can't find your controller you can manually map buttons. Close the application and then open the Psychonauts executable. I hope this helps you out. Peace
Heres your answer: google xpadder
And why are you playing this with a controller? There is just about no PC platformer that controls like this

Well, it was a console game first. :o

Xpadder is definitely the way, it looks like. Thanks for the replies guys.

Any tips for configuring an Xbox controller on Mac? It "works" but the bindings leave a lot to be desired.
I'm having the same problem lately, but the only thing is that it WAS working. Now it isn't, and I'm not sure what the problem is. I didn't change anything. My 360 wireless controller doesn't get picked up in Psychonauts, and neither does my Razer Onza.

Other games I assume work, since the calibration and test dialogs work with the controller. By the way, I actually REINSTALLED this game because I did a refresh of Windows 8 last night, so I know for a fact that it can't be my drivers or something on that end.

do you have a wired controler? i do and ti works perfectley

Wireless works for me. Do you have your controller on already when starting the game? If you turn it on after the game is started it won't recognize it. Once you get it working, you can't bind the controller keys; it'll still tell you to use the kybaord. However, just use the controller buttons and you'll figure out what does what
