Lost the game I saved

So about a week ago, the game crashed a few times, then I lost my saved game. It then wouldn't work, so I looked for a solution on the forums here, and read that many people had success with turing on the W98 compatibility mode, which I did. It was working fine, till the other day when it crashed. I rebooted everything, and it was working fine. I saved, shut it down, and didn't play it for a couple days. Today, it started up, but it didn't have the saved game. My programer friend took a look at it, and tried a few things, but it didn't work.
I doubt I'll get the files back, but I would like to know what to do so that it doesn't happen again.

Hi. You can check if the files are still present by checking the following location:

\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Psychonauts

Can you check if there's anything in there?

There are a number of files in that folder. My friend took a look at it with me, we found the file that says "profiles" and found the profiles I had made, including the saved games, but couldn't get the actual game to recognize them, it just kept insisting that there were no saved games.

If you create a new save profile, in which folder does it appear? Profile 1, profile 2, or profile 3?

Regarding preventing this crash from occurring again, have you tried Windows 95 compatibility mode?

it actually crashed in Windows 95 compatibility.

All of my save files went to Profile 1, and for some reason the game wont recognize them.
