FIXED Xbox controller Issue!
I've seen many complaints about the xbox controller not working (especially the wireless ones), and this fix may apply to you. Many computers have a default gamepad called "HID Compliant game controller" or a "6 direction 24 button hat switch". The problem is the game recognizing the HID controller (which is really nothing, its just always on in some pcs.) as controller 1, and the Xbox one as Controller 2. So...

1. Go to Devices and Printers
2. Right click on HID-Compliant game controller (or whatever the unused controller is)
3. Click Properties
4. Go to the Hardware tab, and click on the HID-compliant game controller. Click properties in the bottom right.
5. Click on the Drivers tab.
6. Click "Disable"

Thats it! Now, any game you play, including Psychonauts, will detect your Xbox controller consistently. This solves the controller issue in many other games too! I hope this helps.

Also, a very simple patch to change the on-screen buttons, to that of the Xbox controller, for easier gameplay. (instead of wondering what to do when it says to press 'e'"

Under the Xbox 360 controller option it tells me that the 360 controller drivers are correct and up to date. It still only comes up as a "Controller" icon in devices and printers but as Xbox 360 within the properties. There's also no HID compliant icon like you said would appear separately. In fact I wouldn't know how to get the HID compliant device back if I wanted to since everything for it diappeared after I disabled it and restarted. Now I just have USB Input device and Xbox 360 controller in the Controller properties. Nostromo had its own icon when it was plugged in and that wasn't listed in under the Controller icon.

Since the priority option to choose the Xbox 360 controller disappeared as soon as I disabled the HID compliant device, it almost seems that it no longer considers the 360 controller a game controller.
I understand it says they are up to date.

But, if it using a standard controller driver set, and not that of an actual xbox 360 controller, it will still say its up to date. Because the generic drivers, are up to date. Thats not what you want. Try Microsofts site, the driver setup file is free.
Thank you. I'll give that a try tomorrow.

OK. I feel like I'm getting somewhere but its still not happening. I reinstalled it, but that didn't do anything different. Then I did much mucking about, trying the things mentioned here and undoing them again as well as restarting windows as well as the game quite alot. I did finally get a popup to troubleshoot and doing that brought back the HID controller and enabled it. Disabling that still removes the xbox 360 from the game controllers menu where I had set priorities. The game still does not accept input from the controller BUT I finally got a separate icon for the 360 in with the devices. The generic 'Controller' icon disappeared (unless I also plug in a 3rd party controller). The game does not accept input from that controller either.

I took a picture and drew step by step instructions, but steam wont let me send it to you lol.

I guess, the only thing I can say is just make sure that its disabled and not uninstalled.. and make SURE that the xbox controller is ON (and working! go to game controller settings, then the properties tab under the xbox controller and you can test it out to make sure your pc sees it) BEFORE the game starts, or it wont work. Thats all I can help you with man, unless i was there :/
:sigh: Guess I'll have to put off playing this one for now. I did all that you said. Windows seems to stop seeing it when I disable the HID one - at least as far as the game controller settings menu goes so I can't even test it there athough the 360 icon is still the only controller icon in devices (with the caution/troubleshoot symbol). If I enable HID, I can see the 360 in game controller settings and test it there but this game won't see it either way.
Does anyone have a link for Psychopad? The link in the thread appears to be dead. Thanks!
I dont know where to find it anymore man, im sorry :/
I just managed to get the controller to work on my macbook with a bit of info I found on another Steam discussion. The bindings will probably need some tweaking, but I'm happy to say that I'll Finally be able to play Psychonauts with a controller!
And it only took two months!!! Lol, jk, im glad it'll finally work for you.
Had to wait on the new macbook :)
It doesnt allow me to click on disable.. :/ I've had nothing but trouble with my xbox-one controller, but the xbox 360 controller worked everytime (it's broken now after years and years..).

Ok, go into your devices and printers, and right click the xbox controller. Go to Game Controller settings, and you should be able to click "Advanced" and set different priorities. And, did you disable the HID compliant controller from within the device manager?

yes i did, i didnt know the consequence, how do i get it back
Hi, I have no problem with the buttons, my problem is that he always turns to the right without touching the Xbone Controller. (Steam Controller and Mouse and Keyboard work fine when the Xbone Controller isnt plugged in.)
Now, I wanted to do what you ve written but there is no "HID-compliant game controller", there are only "HID-Keyboard" and "HID-conform Mouse" and some severel other devices.
My PC runs with win10.
I hope you can help me with that, thanks a lot. :steamhappy:

As it turned out it is the "HID-Complient sytem controller" is the only thing needs to be disabled. Which that did worked for me, also thanks to the OP for the help.
