I want to like this, I really really do, but...
...this is just unplayable. It's a great game, I'm well aware of that. I used to play it on my old PS2, but never finished it, and decided that the recent sale would be a good chance to pick it up again. Maybe get all the way through.

But the port is half-assed and it's as stable as a two-legged chair. Even when you use a controller (which anyone with access to one SHOULD), keyboard-and-mouse controls still appear in all the tutorials and on-screen prompts. That's just a nit-picking annoyance, but this isn't: The game CONSTANTLY crashes, in every way, shape and form one can imagine. Sometimes it freezes the whole computer. Sometimes it just shuts down, neat as you please, without any warning. Sometimes it crashes out and forces you to watch that "Windows is trying to solve the problem by wasting another 15 seconds of your time looking at a progress-bar" window. There's no rhyme or reason, save that it tends to happen when you switch zones, which is kinda' hard to avoid.

Looking at this board, I'm obviously not the only one who's having issues with the technical side of things. It's just... really, really sad, y'know? There IS an amazing game here, it's just that whoever ported it to PC did such a horrid job, there's no real way to tell. If this was my FIRST experience with Psychonauts, I would've written it off as crap ages ago.

Imagine receiving a really amazing sandwich that's been wrapped in used toilet-paper - that's pretty much what we've got here.

I had the same issues. They are easy to fix:

Crashing - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Psychonauts\Psychonauts.exe > Compatibility > Windows 95

Controller - http://www.doublefine.com/forums/viewthread/4952/ Designed for the XBOX 360 gamepad but still a very competant unoffical patch.

Weird, I played it on an old-ass Win 7 laptop and had no issues, the game didn't crash on me once.
The one thing I can help you with is the issue you have with the keys on the on-screen prompts. In the Bindings you can choose the primary and secondary buttons for each action, and you can change or switch up whatever is not working for you. I didn't care for the defaults at all, and invested a couple of the minutes at the beginning of the game to change them to my satisfaction.

Huh. Well, who says you can't always get what you want? If these actually work, I do believe I WILL like the game! ^_^

It's all here in the official FAQ, if you want more detailed help: http://steamcommunity.com/app/3830/discussions/0/864975026795668090/
If you have audio issues like stuttering I even manged to fix that by using an upto date OpenAL32.dll which I found in my Windows > System32 folder.

He's talking about the HUD icons and such showing mouse and keyboard controls no matter what. You can't fix that without a third-party mod.

Wellp, it all worked like a charm. I'm actually using an old X360 controller for my PC, so that patch is perfect for my purposes. I just hope it doesn't mess with my achievements or something...

The crash-fix seems to be working too - I've played for an hour without a single crash, anyway, which is a good sign in my book! Guess I CAN like this game after all. Next stop: 100% Completion, the white whale that eluded me last time! :tgrin:

I'm glad I could help and your achievements will work fine, mine all did.

Never had any Issues with the PC version. Is it really a port though?
BlackDragon Apr 22, 2015 @ 12:49pm
Well, yeah. Heck, it's likely a port twice over. It was for PS2 originally, but then it got ported to the X360... and I think this is a port of the X360-version.

I'm still getting some occasional audio-glitches, incidentally... but frankly, that's so minor I can't even nitpick about it. :p I'll just write it up to 'psychic interference'.
I wish I could agree with what you're saying but I've had literally 0 problems with the controls, haven't ran into any gameplay that is too hard to perform with the keyboard

Trust me, there is nothing I hate more than bad keyboard controls and I usually switch straight to a controller but this is one I could easily play with just the keypad.

This is a version that came out at the same time as the PS2 and Xbox versions. It was originally going to be published by Microsoft, but Microsoft thought they were taking too long. Majesco picked it up, and decided to have Double Fine make a PS2 and PC version of the game. The Xbox 360 version is basically a digital copy of the Xbox version with no changes beyond Xbox 360 system updates that made Psychonauts a little more stable.

In summary, this came out at the same time as the version you know, so it is not a port.

Yup found this out the hardway through personal experience.
If you stick with 1980 or lower resolultion and don't plug in a controller seems stable enough to play the game for hours and finish it otherwise expect random crashes whenever it feels like it!

Huh. I was sure it was a recent remake/rerelease/port, for some reason. Maybe just because there seems to be a lot of those buzzing around lately, and I hadn't noticed Psychonauts being on Steam before. Well, consider me educated...

As for the keyboard-and-mouse controls, maybe they just feel sticky and awkward to me because of my past experience playing it with controller on the PS2. Stuff like that stays in your fingers, y'know?
