Unplayable with a controller
It says that it's mostly playable, but I get no response from it.

My wired Logitech controller works, but sometimes the dpad and left thumb sticks swap themselves. What controller are you using?

Xbox Series X/S and PS DualSense. Neither work in the game.

my experience : controller must be connected / turned on before hitting Play
turning it on even just 2 seconds after / long before the game loads,
will result in the controller not being recognized / picked up
unusual these days & a bit annoying - I keep forgetting / having to restart
no issues as long as I remember to turn it on before my play session

Have you tried using Steam Input? Worked great for me, I don't need to make sure that the controller is on before opening.

Idk why I get excited by old games on sale. They almost never work. Here's another example of a broken game. So disappointed.

i have played many old games that lack controller support with the steam controller without issues, and in linux, but you need to spend a bit of time configuring stuff. but, once you do it, it usually works well.

and you dont need a steam controller (even if imo is still the best option; if you can get one, you should, and take time experimenting with it): sometimes, no matter if you are in windows or linux, using an external program like "joy 2 key" can be better than the options in steam client (i recently found theres also a program that does the opposite, at least in windows: for games that only support controllers and you lack one, it can allow you k+m to be recognised as a controller); sometimes you may need to tweak both the steam client settings, and your external program to fine tune the controls, but it can work.

controller works perfect - just enable steam input

Try using Big Picture. You will still need the M+K for certain stuff in the options menu.
Can't get it to work with Steamdeck
Not working
Linux

idk if this will help but make sure the controller is on before starting the game. For me, I've noticed that if i turn the controller on after the games already booted it doesn't work

Mine does that sometimes: I would have to make sure the controller was on before the game was started n I usually had to close + reopen the game
i'm having issues too (linux). The most frustrating thing is i've played this game on steam before, and 100% completed it. I don't remember the native controller support being bad, but now, with or without the steam input interface, with or without plugging in the controller before the game starts, regardless of what controller layout config i choose, nothing works. Either the camera is broken, or most of the buttons map nowhere. How can this be so broken when it has worked perfectly in the past?!

for me using a wired controller and having it connected before opening the game worked just fine so maybe try that
