turning it on even just 2 seconds after / long before the game loads,
will result in the controller not being recognized / picked up
unusual these days & a bit annoying - I keep forgetting / having to restart
no issues as long as I remember to turn it on before my play session
i have played many old games that lack controller support with the steam controller without issues, and in linux, but you need to spend a bit of time configuring stuff. but, once you do it, it usually works well.
and you dont need a steam controller (even if imo is still the best option; if you can get one, you should, and take time experimenting with it): sometimes, no matter if you are in windows or linux, using an external program like "joy 2 key" can be better than the options in steam client (i recently found theres also a program that does the opposite, at least in windows: for games that only support controllers and you lack one, it can allow you k+m to be recognised as a controller); sometimes you may need to tweak both the steam client settings, and your external program to fine tune the controls, but it can work.
