Collectathon?
I've always like platformers, but I;ve never been too keen on the collectathon aspect of them. For this reason I never really enjoyed Banjo Kazooie or the first Jak game. Can I just ignore the collectathon aspect and the side/hub missions, or will I be missing out on too much?

Collecting stuff helps you level up and levelling up improves your powers, which makes things easier for you as things get harder. Yeah, you can ignore that stuff if you want (except for getting a certain number of arrowheads for a couple of items you need to get), but I reckon the exploration aspect, especially in the hub area, is actually really rewarding in this game, since you get so many fun interactions and funny background stuff going on.

Yeah, I;ve enjoyed it up to a point, but it's always the 'last one' that drives me nuts. I always get the feeling that I'd rather just be progressing with the game than getting that last bit. Some of the figments can be a pain as well, especially when they;re floating about.

Oh, feel free to leave behind figments you are finding frustrating to get. If you want to, you can revisit mental worlds to pick up stuff you missed your first time in the level, and most of them are much easier to navigate once you've 'beaten' them.

Collectibles in Psychonauts can kinda be thought of as experience points that help you rank up and unlock new powers (or strengthen existing ones). You don't HAVE to jump out there and collect that risky flying figment, but if you are the kind of person who likes to squeeze out every last little ounce of XP possible, then you may be interested. But it's not strictly necessary, ya know?

You can easily make it through the game without putting in any special effort to collect every last little thing. Pick up the easy ones as you go by and don't worry about the rest. You definitely do not need to be anywhere near rank 101 to complete the game.
