King of the Beasts Achievement
Was looking through the achievement list. They all seem pretty standard, but then I saw this one. "You learned all of Gau's Rage commands."

Seems simple in theory, but in my dozen or so playthroughs over the past twenty years I've never actually managed to pull this off because of the random nature of the Veldt. Given, it's been a while since I've tried so I'm sure there are tricks.

Any advice on pulling this off?

The Gau Bible... excellent link!! Author confirmed "253" possible rages in this version (including Death Warden). That means regardless of encountering Tonberries (pack 30) and Proto Armor (pack 51*), you are still unable to obtain those Rages when Leaping. Finally, correct me if I'm wrong, but you will not encounter Typhon or Siegfried on the Vedlt without manupilating the hexidecimal code per your post...?

...And yes - Siegfried is hard enough as it is in the coliseum. Keep megalixirs... x_x

*Note: to encounter proto armor on the Vedlt, you HAVE to fight the pack in the Magitek Factory with proto armor x1 and Onion Knight x2. The Proto Amor x2 pack from the Magitek Factory does not exist in the Veldt, and the Proto Armor x1 and Mega Armor x1 pack from the Soul Shrine does not exist in the Veldt. Must be glitched out in an empty pack formation. Weird.

Correct you can't get the Siegfried or Typhon rages normally at all, but they do work if you manually edit them into your data.

It's more than Proto Armor not appearing in the list, it doesn't exist as a rage at all. Tonberries is the only one you can obtain but not use period. Every single other one that fits in his rage data works.

It's like this:
00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 S0000000 00000000
0000000T 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000
00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000
00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 T0000000

All of those can be 1 or 0, and each set of 8 is one byte of data and stores whether or not you have one of eight rages. That S is for Siegfried, the first T Typhon, and the last T is the Tonberries one in the save data, which does get triggered with leap but you can never see it in game. The S and first T will never naturally get triggered in the game, but function if you do it manually. In each set of eight bits the last one comes first, so for the first byte 87654321, 1 being the sergeant and 8 being the Yojimbo. Of course all of that information is superfluous when the achivement award itself will let you know when you have everything possible.

If you group these into sets of 8 they exactly match which bit in the above example counts as having each rage:
http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Rage_%28command%29

Edit: I am no longer talking about Gau's data anymore from here on if that's not obvious.
I am not seeing any Veldt encounter slots period with Siegfried or Typhon but perhaps they are just not marked in the topic I linked to. That is a LOT of single bits to test for encounters to double check each empty slot, and considering many of them may crash the game (I didn't test it, like I said I read just setting all the slot bits to 1 is NOT a good idea people were saying) that's a lot of reloading.

I found out that that method works, if you are looking for a monster in a certain pack and don't want to go through all the 50-60 packs before having another shot.

FYI - just got the achievement. You only need the 253 listed in the Gau Guide posted by Zunnoab. My fears were relieved; you do not need to leap on Proto Armor or Tonberries; however, there are 2 blank slots in the Rage menu (for them, I assume). Happy hunting!

No, Proto Armor does not exist at all it doesn't even record anything for leaping on it. The two are Siegfried and Typhon, in that order. Congratulations, in any case! Tonberries actually appears way at the end but you can't scroll to it.

Interesting, thanks. If I get desperate enough I'll consider that.

FF6.exe+105B761

That is the location of the previous formation's pack number. I have not resorted to outright altering it yet, but I know where it is to at least observe it if trying to manipulate where in the Veldt rotation I am.

Note that the pack number is actually one less than what is listed in some of the guides. As in pack 1 is in reality pack 0.

Edit: When you load a game it randomizes this byte, all eight of its bits. However it only reads the first six bits (0 to 63, the possible pack numbers). So if you're obsessively wanting to see what it's reset to without going into battle and are watching the ram location, you need to look at the binary value and then truncate the last two bits to see what formation it's really started out as.

Edit:
Good lord, several enemies aren't even in the bestiary? Then there was a dumb bird from the Phoenix Cave I didn't unlock for the Veldt even though it was in the bestiary. That is done and I am never doing it again. Kudos to people that somehow enjoy collecting this character's abilities. That was a nightmare.

I will open up and say: If you have to cheat to do this, then you got some problems. If you missed a monster, I can understand but this is why guides were invented. Even before mine was written, there were other sources.

Well I am currently working on it and I haven't missed any monsters (except for a few in WoR, but they are easy backtracks to get them). I wrote a guide on Steam about 9 days after this guy posted the question that is up to date with Steam/GBA standards and naming, including checklists and walkthrough. I am just slow with this game because I have been playing BL2, DD2 and Diablo 3 Season 6 as of late and I only go on FF6 if I got net problems or something.

However, the walkthrough assumes you will be at least TRYING to use Gau in battle, but you can use the checklist and the points about what enemies are fought where to work with it. I also explain the Group formations and how you can refresh the group you are on so you can reroll without having to go through an entire cycle as well.

If you encountered the monster and you either ran or killed it, then it should appear in the Veldt. You probably had bad luck having it appear in the Group. Did you try rerolling the group it was in?

As for Typhon and Siegfred, they are both awful rages in general. Typhon doesn't work on Deathproof enemies and you need a collection of Safety Bits to protect yourself from Tornado. If you want Tornado so bad, get Briareus or Platinum Dragon (Cyclonic), which is 1/16 and works more often. Siegfred although is a living Flare, you become weak to all 8 elements doing so and the only way to negate this is via the Dueling Mask, but by then, you got Yojimbo (Shock), Killer Mantis or Twinscythe (Metal Cutter), Yojimbo (Shock) or my favorite: Luridan or Purusa (Rock Slide, pierces Magic Defense/Evasion).

Tonberries (Attack x 8, Knife) is the only real useful one as you get Garm's status immunity pool, water absorption and 2x the hitting power of Stray Cat, you just need to cancel the fire weakness.

It is possible after ten hours I was imagining things and I was just unlucky.

It's funny in all the times I played the game I had no idea Stray Cat was such a powerful one until this time.

I'm sure I'll play the game again, some day. Regardless, considering some suggested outright using another program to unlock the achievement, I'm glad I actually did leap on all the required enemies. I suspect learning how to read the RAM probably took me more time than just looking up the formations would have. Figuring out I missed that bird would have taken forever though.

Stray Cat isn't the only vicious Physical Rage. There are quite a few others once your Strength builds up. Hell, even some of the 1.5s have benefits, like Garm (immune to mostly every status effect, freeing up Relics), Vector Hound (Auto-Haste), or Bogy (Auto-Protect and x2)

As for my progress, I got about 80% of the Rages in my possesion.

They don't count those.

Siegfried and Tonberries don't count. Death Warden though you need to complete Soul Shrine after you slay Kaiser Dragon to spawn it.
