Personally I find the 2D charm of FF5 and FF6 PC is alot more appealing and nostalgic.
A brief history is required:
FF was originally made for the FC/NES ans MSX2, it was then "updated" for the Wonderswan Color, and then updated again for the GBA, Mobile Phone and PSP (These ports are also by TOSE, the same developer who did this FF6 port) Finally with iOS/Android ports.
Not all of these ports were done in order.
FFI and II got the FC-WSC-PSP-iOS treatment.
FF3 was remade for the DS, there was no porting of the original 2D game. For all intents The NDS FF3 is the same version for iOS and Steam.
FF4 got both a 2D re-release, a 2D PSX re-release and a 3D NDS re-release, AND a 2D sequel. This is because this game was percieved to be a lot more popular. This is no port of the 2D version of FF4 beyond the GBA version.
FF5 on the other hand never even got localized for the English market. The first time anyone on this side of the pond saw it was with the PSX version, 7 years after it was released in Japan on the SFC. There is a GBA version but no NDS and no PSP version.
FF6 was the last SNES FF game (as FFIII), and was properly titled FF6 with all subsequent releases. PSX, GBA and Android versions were made, and the Steam version is ported from the Android version, which in turn is ported from the GBA version.
Tetsuya Nomura has stated he is interested in re-making FF5 and FF6 if FF7's remake goes well.
Unfortunately the reason FF7 is probably the "most deserving" of a remake first because it's never had any ports other than the PC version which came out shortly after the PSX version, and 3D hardware was really immature at the time.
During this time, Square Enix not only released Final Fantasy X, but they re-released for the PS3 in HD and for the PS4, that was 10 years between the PS2 and the PS3 version. Had Square done a "10 year anniversary" for FF6, they would have been done in 2004 and 2014 (which coincides with the iOS/Android version.)
Now the question is... do we want to see a 3D version of FF6 or FF5? I don't think 3D remakes of 2D versions add much value unless there was something pointedly bad about the original platform (FC for FFIII and SFC for FF4) The FFIII remake made plenty of sense because the NES was very limiting. However the FF4 remake didn't add as much value, and likewise a FF5/FF6 3DS port today wouldn't add much either. If FFV and FFVI get the same treatment FFVII is getting (more than just a facelift) then yes maybe it does add new value.
And to that end, you have to realize the difference between a "remake" and a "port of a remake", What we got with FF6 was a port (Android version) of a port(GBA version), that doesn't qualify as a remake since there is zero change in how anything works save for the device-centric input.
It's becoming more and more difficult to play the originals on an HDTV by legal means, at least without it looking like total garbage. I'm not opposed to emulation, in fact I am a huge fan, but I would much rather support what I like, and I'm not going to be buying even the PSX release ever again, much less the SNES or GBA release, because it's a hassle to even play on those systems in my opinion, never been a fan of handhelds myself, and the others just wouldn't display well.
They'd be getting an instant buy from a hell of a lot of people, but I think remaking something so huge is a no-brainer because they'll not just get the (satisfied or not) original fans, but also many fans (the newer generation) who won't play the games simply because they're too old for them.
Here's to hoping, I'll probably buy a console for the games, if I have to, (though this would piss me off) but it would be nice to see PC releases of all of that as well. There's no excuse not to now.
I like the original version of FF5 and 6, more than this Steam version. As I said, it looks so RPG Maker...
And I definitely prefer the 3D remake of 3 and 4.
Thanks, Kisai.
It doesn't necessarily has to look like FF3 and FF4 on DS since the DS era is long over. (Though knowing Square Enix, they'd probably make sure to screw it up)
In fact, I think every FF game should have a beautiful 3D version.
They should start with FF1 all the way to 6. With new beautiful graphics that require today's PS4 powers. Again, knowing SE, they'd probably screw up and make it SO badly optimized that it would have low framerate and low res.
They have to make something the PS4 can handle at full res and at 60 fps.
I think the benefits to even the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ remakes of FF6 outweigh the negative aspects. The sprites look goofy, but they always did. It's nice to see something a little more than pixels if you're playing on a modern TV - that and the translations are infinitely better. In a final fantasy game, that actually does matter quite a bit... plot, you know. Character interaction. So far, playing through FF6 on PC I've noticed almost all of the dialogue is deeper and makes more sense. I'm really happy about that, but I would still pay the money for a full monty type of remake.
One other positive note about it, is the enemy sprites are much more clearly visible. In the original SNES version I always wondered wtf some enemies actually were supposed to be, because they looked questionable. So far I've seen a LOT of the up-scaled (or whatever) sprites and am pleased to see some of those details.
Nah, I recen they should go backwards.
FF7, FF6, FF5, FF4, FF3, FF2, FF1.
Make FF1 the largest of them all.
Apparently, that game was popular (i personally liked it) enough to justify transforming FF5 and FF6 into that style.
Final Fantasy Dimensions itself looked more like FF5 SNES (maybe a little better) in its original japanese mobile release before the iPhones.
So consider this part of the "FF Dimensions style set", and not a true remake. Who is to say they can't remake it for real and also bring it to Steam?
I'm actually fine with that too!!
That would mean that we won't have to wait FOREVER for the important games to come :D :D :D
This part here makes me seriously think. "but they always did" is kind of right.
If this is what we had gotten in the SNES days, I dont think the people complaining today would have complained back then.
The only complaints back then would be from silly close minded adults of the time............ which only means.... oh shi-
