Achievement Question
Is one of the secret achievements for getting all the espers or no? I hope not because I never get Ragnarok the Esper and get the sword instead.

I don't see an "Obtain All Espers" one at all on the achievement list.

There's a secret achivement titled "The Road to the Esper World". I just want to be sure it's NOT for obtaining all espers because getting the sword Ragnarok is an objectively better choice.

Oh, I must have missed that one when I glanced at the list. It's unlock text says "You collected all the magicite", so I would assume Ragnarok is part of it.

Best way to handle that (I think it would work?) is to save before you choose Esper or Sword, choose the Esper to get credit, then reload and choose the sword.

The problem with that is that you'd have to wait until after you did literally everything else before you got it, including Kefka's Tower and the bonus dungeon. Damn. I'll figure something out.

Ragnarok's item ID (the sword) is -27- *winks*

After playing many times over the years, I've only chosen the sword once. I play for story more than stats, and the idea of missing out on one of the magicites just doesn't sit well with me. I totally understand those who do the opposite though, and this achievement is a bit of a kick in the pants for those who prefer the sword.

Though not as much of a kick in the pants as the all rages achievement. To heck with that noise.

Or you could take the esper and then steal the sword during the final boss fight. (you'll keep the item after beating the game, trust me on that)

The "all espers" achievement more or less doubles as the "sane 100% completion" achievement, since by definition it shows you cleared the bonus dungeon, yeah.

You can also steal Ragnorak off one one of the parts of the final boss (Lady?). I know that is super late in the game though.

No

There is no reason to choose the sword since you can get it else where. I would never take the sword (unless you want 2 of them)

To give a more thorough response than just 'no', the Paladin Shield also teaches Ultima. It just takes considerably longer to acquire since you have to break the curse on the Cursed Shield and you get that at the same time as Ragnarok. 255 battles is a lot.

As to why I always get the sword, I'm old and still used to the SNES version where stealing from the last boss is meaningless. I suppose I can make an exception here.

Yes the esper is required, you can have as many ragnarok/illumina as you want from the goddess tier/ coliseum.
