tonberry coliseum
So I've been reading up strats on how to deal with tonberry in the coliseum if your step counter is high enough to max out Traveller attack. The strategy I found is to lock Mog down in run-status and let Tonberry go all out with break until it runs out of mana. However, when looking up tonberry in monster faq, it states that he always uses traveller on his first turn.

Is this accurate? Are there any sure-fire late game strats on how to deal with coliseum tonberry with >max threshold step count on the file?

Thanks for any info here.

Gogo is your saviour. If you gather a full set of imp gear, cast imp on him and then give him the Master's scroll with nothing but fight commands, your secondary accessory of choice can make him an absolute God on the battle field. I do believe shell will also lessen the damage his step mine deals.. But with the monstrous magic defense and physical defense an imp'd Gogo gets geared out is impressive.

Shell won't do anything against Traveler as it deals fixed damage.

Then I must be hardcore lucky as I've got a large portion of my members at 99 with a very high step count and he barely breaks 2k on my Gogo.

Well I'm guessing the output damage of traveler is fixed to maximum (based on step count being large), but it must be reduced by magic defense and/or physical defense to survive. I will try this strat in the Coliseum Nicholai, thx.

You cannot reduce the damage of Traveler in any fashion. It always does number of steps / 32 as unblockable damage.

Your best bet is use someone who has more HP than the damage calculation (easy to do with Red Caps and Bahamut level ups) and arm them with a Mirage Vest to block Knife or Mog and Snow Scarf in Back Row has the highest defense output possible and pray you slay the fiend in 1 shot somehow (be it Dragon Horn and Jump or the usual Master Scroll, Dual-Wield.

Your other option is to find a workaround in the Coliseum to get to the item you want.

Thanks Chris. So the ultimate thing to keep in mind here is that if my step counter is over 319,968 then there is absolutely no way to defeat him - as traveller will do 9999 dmg at this point?

I ask again about the viability of the strat to simply run and let the tonberry expel his mana by spamming break. Will the tonberry use traveller on his first turn no matter what?
