In the case of Edgar, you should stop when Drill or Chainsaw ALWAYS does 9999 (without fail) and start raising Speed to raise the frequency in battle or HP to keep him from dying often. If you are using him for Dragon Horn and Jump, then you can stop at 127 Strength (the game will let you go beyond 127, but it will only accept 127 into the calculations).
For when you do the end game content, Edgar is a helpful character since Drill and Chainsaw ignore Kaiser Dragon's and Ultima Weapon's high armor values and those 2 can't be dodged by Glutturns, Omega Weapon or Storm Dragon;s 200 evasion. He can also wield the Ultima Weapon and Lightbringer with painful effect, but the former is the only thing that can pierce defense. The latter always crits if you got MP and has a 25% chance to call down Holy, which like 3.4 of the enemies in the Dragon Den are weak against.
